60th Birthday of Space Bird Kalpana Chawla

 

Everyone has a desire to cross the clouds and touch the sky. But, it is only possible by some. Kalpana Chawla is a two-time skydivers, not just one. Kalpana Chawla was a role model not only for women around the world but for everyone who wants to be an astronaut.

Born in Colonel, Haryana on July 1, 1961, Kalpana Chawla dreamed of touching the stars one day when she was lying under the stars in a small house. In 1982, he graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the Punjab College of Engineering, Chandigarh. Later, in 1988, he began working at the NASA Ames Research Center and became involved in a number of researches. Kalpana Chawla is interested not only in space research but also in poetry, dance, cycling and walking.


Kalpana, who completed her training in 1995 and qualified as an astronaut, made her first space flight in 1997. He embarked on his first spaceflight on November 19, 1997, working as a mission specialist and chief robot arm operator. Kalpana Chawla is not only the first Indo-US astronaut, but also the first Indian woman to go into space.

Kalpana Chawla has returned after traveling more than 372 hours in space, orbiting the earth 1 crore 40 lakh miles, more than 252 times. In 2003, Kalpana Chawla was again selected for her second spaceflight as part of the SDS-107 crew. Kalpana Chawla's journey, which began in January, unfortunately ended in February.


The crew completed several missions in space and prepared to land on Earth on February 1 as planned. The tragedy occurred just 16 minutes before SDS-107 touched down on Earth. The Columbia spacecraft exploded, leading to the death of athlete Kalpana Chawla. Kalpana Chawla dissolved in the air in the blink of an eye.


To commemorate the achievements of Kalpana Chawla, the Government of India annually honors the women with the Kalpana Chawla Award for their heroic achievements every year since 2011.


Today, 60 years after the birth of the space bird, Kalpana Chawla's optimistic words, "As important as our goal is, so is the path we choose and the journey we choose to achieve," are the treasures of our home who consider him a role model.
