Actor Vijay last imported an expensive Rolls Royce car from the UK in 2012. The Assistant Commissioner of Business Taxation had issued an order to pay entry tax on this car.
Actor Vijay had filed a petition in the Chennai High Court challenging the order and seeking a tax ban on the luxury car. In the petition, actor Vijay had stated that he could not use the car as it was not registered.
Judge SM Subramaniam, who was hearing the case, asked the petitioner's counsel that the petition did not mention what profession the petitioner was doing. The lawyer then referred to the petitioner as the actor.

The judge noted that famous actors have to pay taxes regularly and that tax revenue is the backbone of the country's economy. The judge ruled that the tax was not a donation, but a mandatory contribution, and condemned the tax evasion by actors who pretend to strive for social justice.
The judge advised that the actors should be real heroes and not real heroes. The judge dismissed actor Vijay's petition, ordering him to pay the tax on the imported foreign luxury car within 2 weeks.
The judge imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on actor Vijay and directed him to pay it to the Chief Minister's Corona Relief Fund within two weeks.
